A dishwasher connects to the hot water supply under the sink and drains either into the garbage disposal or into the drain line with a dedicated fitting. The drain line needs to loop high behind the dishwasher to prevent dirty drain water from back-siphoning into the tub during the drain cycle.
Skipping the high loop or using the wrong drain fitting causes drain water to back up into the dishwasher between cycles or to drain slowly. Wes installs both connections correctly from the start. Schedule the installation.
There is one detail that sinks more DIY dishwasher installs than everything else combined. If the drain hose goes into a garbage disposal, the disposal ships with a knockout plug molded into that inlet port. It is solid plastic from the factory. You have to punch it out with a screwdriver and fish the slug back out of the disposal body before you connect anything. Leave it in place and the dishwasher fills, runs a full cycle, and then sits there with dirty water in the bottom because it has nowhere to send it.
Wes gets called out for that one several times a year, usually a week after an appliance delivery crew hooked things up on their way to the next stop. It is a two minute fix on a fresh install and an afternoon of aggravation once the machine is shoved back under the counter and the toe kick is on.
The supply side is simpler but still gets botched. A dishwasher takes hot water off the sink’s hot side through a dual-outlet stop or a tee with its own quarter-turn valve. That valve is the thing you will want at two in the morning someday, so it goes somewhere your hand can actually reach, not buried behind the disposal where you have to lie on the cabinet floor with a flashlight.

Electrical connection
Most dishwashers need a dedicated 20-amp circuit.
A dishwasher requires a dedicated 20-amp, 120V circuit in most cases. As a licensed GC as well as a master plumber, Wes handles the electrical connection. If the circuit does not exist under the cabinet, he runs it from the panel as part of the installation. You will not need a separate electrician.
He also confirms the connection has GFCI protection as required by current code in most Front Range municipalities.
Older Littleton and Lakewood kitchens are where this comes up. A house built in the sixties or seventies often never had a dishwasher at all, or it had one sharing a circuit with the disposal and half the counter outlets. That arrangement worked until somebody ran the microwave during a heat-dry cycle. Then the breaker trips, and it keeps tripping, and everybody blames the new appliance.
Wes checks the panel before he quotes the job, not after. If there is a free slot and a clean path for the cable, adding the circuit is straightforward. If the panel is already full, that is a different conversation and you hear it up front instead of mid-install.
Model matters too. Some units ship hardwire-ready with a junction box on the underside. Others come with a cord and expect a receptacle in the adjacent cabinet, positioned so the plug is reachable without pulling the machine out. Wes reads the install manual for your specific model before cutting anything, because the two setups are not interchangeable and swapping one for the other voids the warranty on most brands.

Getting the drain right
The high loop is the difference between clean and contaminated.
The high loop prevents back-siphoning from the sink drain into the dishwasher. Some local codes require a separate air gap fitting mounted on the sink or counter instead. The high loop is exactly what it sounds like. The drain hose gets fastened to the underside of the countertop, as high as it will go, before it drops down to the disposal or the drain tee. Water cannot climb that hump on its own, so sink water and disposal debris stay out of your clean dishes. It costs one clamp and thirty seconds. Skipping it is the reason a dishwasher smells sour no matter how many cleaning tablets you run through it.
An air gap is the chrome cylinder some homeowners have sticking up next to the faucet. It does the same job mechanically instead of by geometry, and certain jurisdictions here require one rather than accepting a high loop. If yours does, Wes mounts it in an existing deck hole where he can, so you are not drilling a granite countertop for a fitting.
Two other things get checked before the machine slides back in. The hose run has to be free of low spots where water sits and grows a film, and the leveling legs have to be adjusted so the tub sits square and the door seals across the whole gasket. A dishwasher that is out of level by a quarter inch will weep at one bottom corner and you will hunt that drip for months thinking it is the supply line. If the leak turns out to be somewhere else entirely, that is a leak detection call, and Wes handles that too.

My new dishwasher fills but never drains. What happened?
Nine times out of ten it is the knockout plug in the garbage disposal. Disposals ship with that inlet port sealed from the factory and whoever hooked up the machine did not punch it out. The dishwasher has nowhere to send the water so it sits in the bottom of the tub. Quick fix, and Wes retrieves the plastic slug so it does not end up jamming the disposal later.
Why does my dishwasher smell even though it is clean?
Usually the drain hose. If there is no high loop, sink water and food debris siphon back down into the tub between cycles and sit there. Same thing if the hose sags into a low spot where water pools. Rerouting and strapping the hose properly fixes the smell for good, and no amount of cleaner in the detergent cup will do it otherwise.
Do I need a permit to have a dishwasher installed?
Swapping an existing dishwasher for a new one in the same spot generally does not need one. Adding a dishwasher where there never was one, which means new supply, new drain, and a new circuit, usually does. Wes pulls the permit when the job calls for it and handles the inspection, so it is not something you have to chase down.
Can you put a dishwasher where there is no cabinet opening?
Yes, and this is where the general contractor license does real work. Cutting a cabinet run to accept a standard 24 inch unit means removing a base cabinet, reworking the countertop edge, and often relocating the drain and supply.
