What this county throws at pipe
Hard water and a real freeze line.
Freezes here are not usually about the depth of the buried line. The main comes in below frost and generally does fine. What splits is the pipe that never should have been where it is: a run through an uninsulated crawlspace, a line in an exterior wall on the north side of the house, a supply to an outdoor faucet that somebody left the hose attached to in October. Those are the calls. And the split almost never shows itself while it is frozen, because ice is holding the hole shut. It shows up when everything thaws and the water starts moving again, which is why people discover it hours after the cold snap breaks.
The single most useful thing a Jeffco homeowner can do is pull the hose off the outdoor spigot before the first hard freeze. A hose left connected traps water in the bib where it can freeze back into the wall, and a frost-free bib does not protect you if the hose stops it from draining. Beyond that, insulating the exposed runs and sealing the drafts that reach them is cheap work that prevents an expensive night. When one does let go, we thaw and repair it and then fix the reason it froze, because otherwise you are booking the same call next January.
Add the older housing stock in places like Olde Town Arvada and the Lakewood core, and there is plenty of repipe and sewer work too. Mid-century ranches in this county are often on a slab, which changes leak work entirely. There is no basement to look up into, so a slab leak announces itself as a warm spot on the floor, a water bill that jumped for no reason, or the sound of water running with everything shut off. Slope is the foothills variable nobody warns you about. On a graded lot, water leaving the house and water arriving at the house are both moving downhill with some enthusiasm, and that shapes everything below grade. Sewer lines on a steep run can actually fall too fast, which sounds like a good problem until you understand what happens: the water outruns the solids, the solids stay put, and you get a line that clogs repeatedly for no reason anybody can see from inside the house. The other side of slope is what comes toward the foundation. Are frozen pipes really a problem in Jefferson County?

My pipe froze but nothing is leaking. Am I fine?
Not necessarily. Ice can split a pipe and then hold the split closed until it thaws, so the leak shows up hours later when water starts moving again. If a line froze, shut the water off at the main, let it thaw slowly, and watch that section closely once it is flowing. Never put a torch on a frozen pipe.
