Denver is unusual because the city and the county are the same thing. There is no unincorporated stretch to sort out, no county line running through a subdivision. What that means practically is that almost every property here is on city water and on a city sewer main, and the questions are about age rather than about whether a system exists at all.
Age is the whole story. A house in Baker or Curtis Park may be pushing a hundred and twenty years old and still running its original drain stack. A ranch in Harvey Park is seventy and on galvanized. A pop-top two blocks over is five years old with PEX in the walls and a hundred-year-old sewer lateral under the front yard. Those are three completely different jobs on the same block.

What this county throws at pipe
Historic charm, original plumbing.
Galvanized steel rusts from the inside out. The pipe looks fine from the basement, but the bore is closing up with scale year after year until a three-quarter-inch line is passing what a straw would. People assume the city dropped their pressure. It did not. Their pipe did. The tell is that the hot side is worse than the cold, and the upstairs bathroom is worse than the basement laundry. A repipe in copper or PEX ends it permanently, and it is one of the few jobs where the before and after is obvious the same afternoon.
The sewer side is roots. Denver planted big street trees generations ago and those root systems are now sitting right on top of clay laterals with joints every few feet. Roots find the joint, get in, and build a mat that catches everything you flush. That is why a line will drain fine for two years and then back up twice in one month. Snaking cuts a hole through the mat and buys you time. It does not fix the joint.
So we camera the line before anybody digs anything, on a video inspection you watch with us. Then you know whether you are looking at a spot repair, a trenchless replacement that spares the yard and the sidewalk, or an open cut. Alley access helps on a lot of Denver lots, and where the line runs to the street we work with the city’s requirements rather than around them.
Cast iron drains inside the house are the third piece. They do not root, they just corrode until the bottom of the horizontal run scales over or rots through, usually in a basement ceiling where you find it as a smell before you find it as a drip. We replace those sections in PVC and put the ceiling back the way it was.

A lot of Denver work is not a repair at all. It is somebody adding a second story to a bungalow, digging out a basement that was never meant to be living space, or opening up the back of a house that has had the same galley kitchen since Truman. That is where the GC license does real work alongside the plumbing license.
Pop-tops are their own animal. You are putting a full bathroom, sometimes two, on top of a house whose supply and drain system was sized for one bath and a kitchen sink. The stack has to be evaluated honestly. Adding fixtures to a marginal vent or an undersized main is how people end up with a beautiful new upstairs and gurgling drains downstairs. We look at the whole system before anybody frames a wall, so the new bathroom works on day one and still works in ten years.
Basement digs raise a different question. Once you are below the level of the sewer main, gravity stops helping you and you are into ejector pumps and sump work. Denver’s older neighborhoods have a lot of half-height cellars that people want to turn into a legal bedroom and bath. That is doable. It just has to be planned around where the sewer actually leaves the house, which we confirm on camera rather than guess.
Alley access is a small thing that matters more than people expect. Most of the older Denver grid has a rear alley, which means we can often get a machine, a spoil pile, and a materials drop off the street entirely and keep your front yard and your parking intact. On the newer infill lots without an alley, we plan the staging before we start so you are not surprised.

Water heaters deserve a note of their own in this city. Denver water is hard enough to lay down scale in a tank, and a lot of the older houses have the heater tucked into a closet or a corner of an unfinished basement where nobody looks at it for a decade. Six years in, the anode rod is gone and the tank is on borrowed time. Flushing it annually is genuinely worth doing, and if yours is past ten years old in a finished space, replacing it on your schedule beats replacing it on its schedule at two in the morning.
Old houses also come with old gas. Denver has plenty of homes still running black iron installed before anybody thought about a range that pulls what a modern one does, or a garage heater, or a fire pit off the back of the house. Gas work is not a place to experiment. We size it, run it, pressure-test it, and get it inspected.

Yes. In the older neighborhoods it is usually roots in clay or cast iron. We camera it, then repair or replace, trenchless where the line allows. If it has backed up more than once in a year, snaking it again is treating the symptom. Get eyes in the line and you will know whether it is one bad joint or a line that has run its course.
How do I know if my low pressure is the pipe or the city?
Usually the pipe. If the pressure is worse upstairs than in the basement, worse on hot than cold, and has faded gradually over years rather than dropped overnight, that is galvanized supply closing up with rust. A pressure test at the hose bib tells us quickly. A sudden drop across the whole house is a different problem and points at the main or the regulator.
How long does a Denver sewer replacement take?
A straightforward trenchless run on a typical city lot is often a one-day job plus inspection. An open cut across a mature yard, under a driveway, or into the street takes longer and involves permitting and traffic control. We tell you which one you are looking at after the camera goes in, not before, because guessing helps nobody.
